INTRODUCTION: In acute stroke, one of the noninvasive techniques utilized to determine neuronal injury and functional prognosis is the measurement of serum Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) levels.
METHODS: In this study, 30 patients with cerebrovascular disease (15 ischemic and 15 hemorrhagic insults) and 15 contol patients which had similar age and gender were studied. NSE levels were measured in acute phase (first 48±12 hours) and lesion types, localization, initial score of Glasgow Coma Scale, initial blood glucose level, age and a Rankin Score at the tenth day were determined.
RESULTS: Althought the NSE levels were found to be higher in ischemic and hemorrhagic groups than the control group, the results were not statistically significant.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Among the compared values, NSE levels were found to be significantly high (p = 0.04, p < 0.05) only in the group whose initial Glasgow Coma Scale scores were poor.
